The music starts. A performer walks onto the stage.

Five or ten minutes later, the audience is applauding and another burlesque act is over.

Simple, isn’t it?

Well… not quite.

Behind those few minutes on stage can be weeks or months of ideas, music, choreography, costume making, rehearsals and the occasional moment of wondering why attaching several thousand rhinestones by hand ever seemed like a sensible idea.

A great burlesque performance may look effortless.

Making it look effortless is where much of the work happens.

It Usually Starts With an Idea

Every act needs somewhere to begin.

Sometimes it’s a piece of music. Sometimes it’s a costume, a character, a story or even a joke that refuses to go away.

Burlesque gives performers an extraordinary amount of creative freedom. An act can be glamorous and sensual, funny and ridiculous, dark and theatrical, politically provocative or completely unexpected.

The important question isn’t necessarily, “What should a burlesque act look like?”

It’s:

“What do I want the audience to experience?”

Once a performer knows that, an act can begin to take shape.

Finding the Right Music

Music can completely change a performance.

Some acts are created around a single song, while others combine several tracks, sound effects or spoken sections to tell a story.

And the obvious choice isn’t always the best one.

A performer might deliberately put an unexpected piece of music against a glamorous costume or use changes in tempo to surprise the audience.

Listen closely to a good act and you’ll often notice that movements, reveals and moments of comedy have been carefully timed to the music.

That apparent spontaneity?

Quite often rehearsed many, many times.

Then Comes the Costume

This is where things can become dangerous.

Not physically dangerous, necessarily.

Financially dangerous.

Rhinestones have a habit of multiplying.

A burlesque costume isn’t simply something beautiful to wear. For many acts, the costume is effectively part of the choreography.

A glove has to come off at the right moment. A fastening needs to release reliably. A piece of clothing needs to move exactly as expected.

Something that looks spectacular in a photograph isn’t necessarily something that works on stage.

Performers therefore modify, test, rebuild and sometimes completely rethink costumes as an act develops.

And yes, occasionally something still refuses to come off when it’s supposed to.

That’s live performance.

Creating the Performance

Once the idea, music and costume begin coming together, it’s time to work out what actually happens on stage.

Choreography doesn’t necessarily mean complicated dance routines.

It can be movement, positioning, facial expression, interaction with the audience and knowing when to simply stop and let a moment breathe.

Burlesque is as much about anticipation as action.

A performer learns when to reveal something—and when to make an audience wait just a little longer.

That relationship between performer and audience is one of the things that makes live burlesque so different from simply watching something on a screen.

Rehearse. Adjust. Repeat.

Then comes rehearsal.

And more rehearsal.

Music gets changed.

Movements that seemed brilliant in someone’s imagination turn out to be physically impossible.

Costume pieces misbehave.

Props fall over.

Something that was supposed to be dramatic unexpectedly becomes hilarious.

So the performer changes it.

An act evolves through repetition until the individual pieces begin to feel like one performance.

Experienced performers may make it look spontaneous, but knowing an act intimately is often what gives them the freedom to play with an audience when they’re actually on stage.

Five Minutes on Stage

Eventually, the lights dim.

The music begins.

And all those hours of preparation disappear into a few minutes beneath the spotlight.

The audience sees the finished performance.

They don’t necessarily see the notebooks, rehearsals, costume repairs, abandoned ideas, nervous moments backstage or the solitary rhinestone discovered inexplicably attached to someone’s kitchen table three weeks later.

But all of that is part of burlesque too.

Perhaps that’s something worth remembering the next time you watch a performer take the stage.

You’re not simply watching someone wearing a beautiful costume.

You’re watching an idea that somebody imagined, developed, built, rehearsed and finally had the confidence to share with a room full of strangers.

And that’s rather magical.

Celebrating the People Behind the Performances

At Burlesque Girl, that’s exactly what we want to celebrate.

Not simply the feathers, glamour and spectacle, but the creativity and people behind them.

As Burlesque Girl grows, we’ll be introducing more performers, sharing events and exploring the extraordinary variety within the burlesque community.

And if you’re a performer yourself, we’d particularly love to hear the story behind your act.

What inspired it?

How long did it take to create?

And perhaps most importantly…

How many rhinestones did you use?

Burlesque Girl — Glitz.
