So, You Want to Try Burlesque? A Beginner’s Guide to Taking the First Step

So, You Want to Try Burlesque? A Beginner’s Guide to Taking the First Step

Perhaps you’ve watched a burlesque performance and thought, “I’d love to do that… but I could never get up there.”

Maybe it’s the costumes, the music, the confidence or simply the sheer fun of it that has caught your imagination.

Here’s the important bit, every burlesque performer had a first day.

Nobody begins with a perfectly polished act, a wardrobe covered in rhinestones and the confidence to command a stage. Like any performance art, burlesque is something you can learn, explore and make entirely your own.

So, if you’ve ever wondered whether burlesque might be for you, here’s how you can take that first step.

What Actually Is Burlesque?

Modern burlesque covers an enormous range of performance styles.

You might encounter classic showgirl glamour, comedy, cabaret, theatrical storytelling, elaborate costumes, dance, character performances and acts that deliberately defy expectations.

That’s part of what makes it so interesting.

There isn’t one correct way to look like a burlesque performer.

There isn’t one correct body type.

And there certainly isn’t one personality you need to have.

Some performers are naturally outgoing. Others are quiet offstage and transform completely when the lights come on.

Burlesque gives you the opportunity to create something that represents you.

Start by Watching and Learning

One of the easiest ways to begin is simply to experience more burlesque.

Attend local shows. Watch different performers. Explore different styles and discover what appeals to you.

You may find yourself drawn to the elegance of traditional burlesque, the humour of comedic acts or something altogether more theatrical.

Don’t worry about deciding what your style is immediately.

That comes later.

For now, enjoy discovering what’s possible.

Find a Beginner-Friendly Class

If you’d like to move from watching to performing, a beginner’s burlesque class or workshop is a great place to start.

A good beginner class should be welcoming and supportive, with no expectation that you already know what you’re doing.

You’ll often learn things such as basic movement, stage presence, posing, musicality, character and simple choreography.

More importantly, you’ll meet other people who are learning too.

Walking through the door for that first class can sometimes be the hardest part.

Once you’re inside, you might wonder why you waited so long.

You Don’t Need an Expensive Costume

Those spectacular rhinestone-covered costumes you see on stage can represent many hours of work and sometimes a considerable amount of money.

You don’t need one to begin.

For your first classes, comfortable clothing that allows you to move is far more important.

As you develop your own performance style, you can gradually experiment with costumes, accessories and embellishments.

Many performers create and customise their own costumes too.

A simple garment, a packet of rhinestones and a little imagination can go surprisingly far.

Just be warned: discovering rhinestones can become a hobby all by itself.

Finding Your Stage Persona

One of the most enjoyable parts of becoming a performer can be creating your stage identity.

Some performers use a variation of their own personality.

Others invent an entirely new character.

Your stage persona might be glamorous, mischievous, mysterious, powerful, ridiculous, elegant or a mixture of all of them.

And then, of course, there’s the stage name.

Choosing one can be great fun, although discovering that somebody halfway around the world already uses the perfect name you just invented is practically a burlesque rite of passage.

Take your time.

Your identity can evolve as you do.

Confidence Comes After You Start

It’s easy to imagine that burlesque performers walk onto the stage because they’re already extraordinarily confident.

Often, the opposite is true.

For many people, performing helps build confidence.

You don’t necessarily wait until you’re confident enough to perform.

You learn.

You practise.

You take small steps.

And somewhere along the way, confidence begins to appear.

The person nervously standing at the back of their first workshop might eventually become the performer commanding an entire theatre.

Your First Performance

Eventually, you might decide you’d like to perform publicly.

There’s no need to rush.

Some people attend classes simply because they enjoy them, and that’s absolutely fine. Others quickly discover that the stage is exactly where they want to be.

When you’re ready, student showcases and beginner-friendly events can provide a supportive introduction to performing.

Your first act doesn’t have to be technically complicated.

A simple idea performed confidently can be far more memorable than something enormously elaborate.

Think about what you want the audience to feel.

Choose music you genuinely enjoy.

Develop a character or idea.

Practise.

Then practise some more.

And when the moment finally arrives, enjoy it.

You’ve earned it.

Burlesque Is a Community

Perhaps one of the nicest surprises for newcomers is discovering the community surrounding burlesque.

Behind the performers are producers, photographers, costume makers, teachers, venues, stage crews, audiences and countless other people who help make shows happen.

Support other performers.

Attend shows.

Celebrate people’s successes.

Ask questions.

Learn from those with more experience.

And when somebody eventually walks into their first class looking every bit as nervous as you once felt, make them feel welcome too.

That’s how communities grow.
